Tropical Gardening: Canoe crops are the foundation of the Polynesian lifestyle

When the initially Polynesians arrived in the Hawaiian Islands, there had been no coconut palms listed here. There were being no mountain apple, breadfruit, kalo and lots of other crops we think of as Hawaiian. If you believe that kukui, bananas, and ti are natives and look to grow easily, then it is time to rethink! These vegetation are alien, nonnative species introduced to Hawaii by the Polynesians as they migrated throughout Southeast Asia and the Pacific Ocean. These are referred to as canoe plants. They were being critical to their survival, particularly when Polynesians explored new islands and observed those like Hawaii lacked the variety of fruits and medicinal crops they desired.
