Lifted-mattress vegetable gardening topic of Feb. 28 Floretum Conference

Danene 4

Don’t forget this from past February? Neither snow nor rain nor warmth nor this week’s chilly snap can discourage Edmonds gardeners. They are previously outside planning their veggie beds and pruning roses. In that spirit, Edmonds Floretum Back garden Club provides its February meeting on raised-mattress vegetable gardening Monday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. by way of Zoom. Guests are welcome.

Master Gardener Mark Hawley will speak about raised beds, building, soil, plant selection, nutrition, routine maintenance and integrated pest administration.

Hawley experiments at dwelling with diverse gardening approaches. He has a massive hugelkultur backyard, 1 where by he mounds up leaves, branches, logs, grass clippings, straw and other compostable elements, lays soil on leading, and vegetation veggies in the soil. As the mound decomposes, it aerates the plant, releases nutrients, and retains dampness.  He also will work with lifted rows, elevated beds, veggies in pots, and passive system hydroponics.
