Gardens at SIUE celebrates Earth Working day with SIUE college students


The Gardens at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville celebrated Earth Working day on Saturday with some distinct things to do involving the SIUE Honors Scholar Affiliation and APO Provider Fraternity.

“We’ve experienced a gradual start in the Garden this calendar year mainly because of the weather,” volunteer coordinator Carol Gardner explained, “so it was nice to have these kinds of a attractive working day to celebrate Earth Day.”

Gardner is a retired teacher who taught at Lincoln Middle Faculty in Edwardsville, and in full taught for 32 several years. For seven a long time now, she has been the volunteer coordinator at the Gardens at SIUE and routinely volunteers as a learn gardener each 7 days.


Gardner, together with other grasp gardeners and master naturalists who consistently volunteer to the maintenance of the Gardens at SIUE, planted indigenous crops with the SIUE students.

Master naturalist Invoice Klunk gave a brief lesson on invasive plants and how to get rid of honeysuckle.

The honors learners helped in removing the honeysuckle, when the APO college students raked and removed gumballs.

“We’re often pleased to see college students in the Back garden,” Gardner explained, “and these groups had been a great aid to us. It was encouraging to hear how considerably they value getting this wonderful location-on campus, and they’re inclined to assistance preserve it that way. We’re now considering about our upcoming assignments with them.”

There is no director that oversees gatherings, so all events are planned and executed by the volunteers.

In total, 25 gardeners and volunteers contribute towards the repairs and seasonal modifications in just the gardens. Most of the volunteers are customers of the community local community who have ties to SIUE or Edwardsville and take pleasure in the substantial yard.
