ASAL counties urged to embrace sensible farming – Kenya Information Company

Arid and Semi-arid (ASAL) county governments have been urged to embrace science and technology in food generation to mitigate the adverse outcomes of drought.

Speaking for the duration of the launch of Tana River Centre for Innovation and Youth Empowerment Executive Director of California Miramar University-Kenya, Prof. Dominic Mwenja, said they are different foodstuff production techniques that can be utilised in dry locations in its place of relying on aid meals distribution.

“The drought that we have in this state we can mitigate by wise farming, not trucking food items to the place people are but teaching individuals how to increase foods.  No Kenyan must go to mattress hungry greenhouses can be set in really dry regions,” said Prof. Mwenja.

“No village need to go hungry, when I see our people today dying or becoming malnourished it hurts me mainly because science and engineering are there to make absolutely sure our people have food items. All we have to have is water. When you go to most places 200 meters under your feet you will uncover drinking water once you bring that drinking water up then you construct a procedure like Hydroponic device, we can feed our people.”

The County Government of Tana River in conjunction with Marimar College has experienced 102 youths on hydroponic farming at the centre. The youths are envisioned to transition from traditional farming to wise farming.

The hydroponic unit uses the trough technique and soil are not utilized, Prof Mwenja explained, there is a nutrient shipping procedure that lets you to feed the crop. If you go to Israel you will obtain them growing fruits in a desert they use a hydroponic system like this.

He went on: “They use the sunlight to get water and vitamins into the plant. For that reason we can improve meals in Tana River, Turkana, Garissa, and Mandera there is no purpose for persons to go hungry in this country.”

This variety of farming takes advantage of only 20 per cent of water as opposed to common farming for that reason little drinking water is required to mature food items.

It works by using a drip procedure that carries drinking water with nutrients, the h2o goes by the process.  The drinking water can be recycled. Aside from the cereals, all the other crops can be grown.

Prof. Mwenja hailed the hydroponic program for revolutionizing farming indicating it requires absent all the chemical substances you locate in foods hence doing away with disorders like abdomen cancers.

“We are also able to multiply output we eliminate the majority of chemical compounds we would use outside as a result addressing the challenges of wellbeing challenges that come with substances in our foodstuff,’’ he stated.
